Villaviciosa de Odón is a municipality in the province of Madrid, situated in the southwestern area of the Community of Madrid, approximately 25 kilometres from the capital. With a population close to 27,600 inhabitants and an altitude of 645 metres above sea level, it occupies an intermediate position between the Madrid plains and the first reliefs of the mountain range. Its surroundings combine residential zones with natural spaces linked to the Guadarrama River.
The eclipse of 12 August 2026 will be visible from Villaviciosa de Odón as a partial eclipse. Maximum occurs at 20:32, local time, with the Sun 7.4 degrees above the horizon towards the west-northwest. Although the visibility verdict is favourable, the Sun's low position requires an observation point with the western horizon completely free of buildings, trees or other obstacles that might intercept the line of sight.
August in Villaviciosa de Odón is the warmest month of the year, with an average temperature of 25.7 °C, highs reaching 32.8 °C and lows of 18.6 °C, according to AEMET data for the period 1991–2020. Average precipitation for the month is very scarce, with barely 10.8 mm. The probability of clear skies exceeds 83 %, with over 344 hours of sunshine accumulated in the month. The risk of thunderstorms is moderate and cannot be ruled out. Data: AEMET.
The last total eclipse visible from Villaviciosa de Odón took place on 8 July 1842, 184 years ago, with a totality duration of almost two minutes. More recently, on 3 October 2005, the town witnessed an annular eclipse with an obscuration of 90.2 % and an annular phase of around four minutes. Following the eclipses of 2026 to 2028, the next annular eclipse predicted for this area will not arrive until 8 December 2113.
At the moment of maximum eclipse on 12 August 2026 at 20:32, the Sun will be 7.4 degrees above the horizon, in a west-northwest direction, with an azimuth of 283 degrees. This very low position in the evening sky means that any construction, vegetation or relief in that direction can obstruct the view. To take advantage of the eclipse it is recommended to position yourself at an elevated point with the western horizon completely clear.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
