Leganés is a municipality in the Community of Madrid situated south of the capital, with a population of around 188,000 inhabitants and an altitude of 672 metres above sea level. It forms part of Madrid's metropolitan area and sits within the southern crown of industrial and residential municipalities surrounding the central city. Its terrain is flat and open, characteristic of the Castilian plateau, which facilitates clear horizons in all directions.
On 12 August 2026, Leganés will experience a partial solar eclipse. At maximum, at 20:32 local time, the Sun will be obscured by around 90% of its disc. Being a partial eclipse, there will be no period of totality, but the reduction in light will be noticeable. The Sun will be 7.3° above the horizon, with a margin of 6.5° with respect to the surrounding terrain, so visibility should be unobstructed from most open points in the city.
August in Leganés is dry and hot, with an average temperature of 26 °C, highs around 33 °C and lows of around 19 °C. The month's average precipitation is scarce, around 7.8 mm, and the municipality accumulates approximately 347 hours of sunshine during August according to AEMET data from the 1991–2020 period. The probability of clear skies stands at around 84%, although there is a moderate risk of afternoon thunderstorms, typical of the plateau in late summer.
The last total eclipse visible from Leganés took place on 8 July 1842, 184 years ago, with a totality phase of approximately 118 seconds. More recently, on 3 October 2005, an annular eclipse was recorded with 90.3% obscuration. Following the eclipses of 2026, 2027 and 2028, the next notable annular eclipse at Leganés's location is calculated for 8 December 2113, whilst no total eclipse is predicted before that date.
At the moment of maximum eclipse, at 20:32, the Sun will be positioned 7.3° in altitude above the horizon and at an azimuth of 283°, that is, in a direction practically west-northwest, slightly north of due west. Being the end of the afternoon, the Sun will have already moved considerably towards the western horizon. To observe it with certainty, it is advisable to find a location without buildings or trees in that direction, preferably an open area or a rooftop with westerly views.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes, partial eclipse: the Sun will be 99.9% covered at maximum from Leganés.
Maximum occurs at 20:32 local time (18:32 UTC) in Leganés.
Look WNW (azimuth 283°); the Sun will be 7° above the horizon at maximum from Leganés.
Yes, Leganés is an excellent choice (score 75/100): favorable geometry, clear horizon, and good August climatology.
Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
For the August 12 eclipse. Recommended stay: Aug 10–14, 2026.
