Tomelloso is a municipality in the province of Ciudad Real, in the heart of Castilla-La Mancha, with a population of just over 36,000. Situated at 669 metres altitude on the La Mancha plain, it is one of the region's most important wine-producing centres, surrounded by extensive vineyards that sprawl across an almost horizontal topography. Its open sky and the minimal elevation of the surrounding terrain directly shape astronomical observation from the municipality.
On 12 August 2026, Tomelloso will fall within the zone of partial eclipse: the lunar disc will cover part of the Sun without reaching totality. Maximum eclipse occurs at 20:33, when the Sun will be just 6.2° above the horizon. With the Sun so low in the late afternoon, any obstruction to the west-northwest—buildings, trees or terrain—can interfere with viewing. The estimated clearance above the topographic horizon is 6.3°, which allows you to see the maximum from an unobstructed vantage point.
August in Tomelloso is the driest and sunniest month of the Manchego year. AEMET data from the period 1991–2020 show a low risk of thunderstorms in August, which bodes well for the eclipse. August afternoons on the Castilian plateau tend to be warm and stable, with clear skies predominating over cloud cover, though occasional afternoon convective storms, though infrequent, are not impossible at this time of year.
The last total eclipse visible from Tomelloso occurred on 28 May 1900, 126 years ago, with a duration of 83 seconds of totality. Since then, no eclipse of this type has crossed the Manchego sky. After the eclipses of 2026, 2027 and 2028, you will have to wait until 13 July 2075 to see an annular eclipse from this municipality, when the Moon will cover 87.3% of the solar diameter for just over three minutes.
At the moment of maximum eclipse, at 20:33 on 12 August, the Sun will be at 284° azimuth, a direction almost exactly west-northwest. At a height of just 6.2° above the horizon, it will be very close to sunset. To observe the eclipse, it is best to find a vantage point with a clear horizon in that direction, away from buildings or tall vegetation that might hide it at such a low elevation.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes, partial eclipse: the Sun will be 99% covered at maximum from Tomelloso.
Maximum occurs at 20:34 local time (18:34 UTC) in Tomelloso.
Look WNW (azimuth 284°); the Sun will be 6° above the horizon at maximum from Tomelloso.
Yes, Tomelloso is an excellent choice (score 75/100): favorable geometry, clear horizon, and good August climatology.
Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
