Pozuelo de Alarcón is a municipality in the Community of Madrid located on the western outskirts of the capital, at 704 meters above the Castilian plateau. With more than 82,000 residents, it forms part of the Madrid metropolitan area and extends between Casa de Campo and the first reliefs of the sierra. Its elevated position relative to the urban center provides broad panoramic views toward the west.
On August 12, 2026, Pozuelo de Alarcón will lie outside the path of totality and will witness a partial solar eclipse. Maximum will occur at 20:31 local time, with the Sun at 7.4° above the horizon to the west-northwest (azimuth 283°). The margin with respect to the terrain profile is 7.1°, sufficient for the solar disk to be visible under normal conditions, though the low altitude requires a clear western horizon free of obstacles.
In August, the risk of storms in Pozuelo de Alarcón is low according to AEMET records (1991–2020 period), which favors eclipse observation. Summer afternoons in the Community of Madrid combine intense heat with generally clear skies, especially during the second half of the month. Source: AEMET.
The last total eclipse visible from Pozuelo de Alarcón occurred on July 8, 1842, 184 years ago, with a totality duration of 108 seconds. More recently, on October 3, 2005, an annular eclipse covered 90.3% of the solar disk for just over four minutes. After the eclipses of 2026, 2027, and 2028, the next annular eclipse will not arrive until December 8, 2113, with an obscuration of 83.9%.
At the moment of maximum eclipse, the Sun will be 7.4° above the horizon, oriented to the west-northwest with an azimuth of 283°. This position is roughly equivalent to a clenched fist held at arm's length above the horizon line, so any building or grove to the west of the observation point can block the view. It is advisable to choose an elevated location with a clear view to the west.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
