Esplugues de Llobregat is a municipality in the province of Barcelona, integrated into the metropolitan area of the Catalan capital. With just over 46,000 inhabitants and an altitude of 102 metres above sea level, it sits on the left bank of the Llobregat river, between Barcelona and the first foothills of the Collserola massif. Its compact urban fabric and its position next to one of Catalonia's major river basins define its everyday landscape.
On 12 August 2026, Esplugues de Llobregat will experience a partial solar eclipse. Maximum occurs at 20:29 local time, when the Sun will already be very close to the western horizon: its altitude will not exceed 4°. With a margin of just 2.9° above the topographic horizon, observation requires an elevated point with clear views to the west-northwest. Any obstruction—buildings, hills or trees—can prevent you from seeing the phenomenon at its culmination.
August in Esplugues de Llobregat is warm but somewhat milder than inland Spain. Average temperatures hover around 24 °C, with highs around 29 °C and night-time lows rarely dropping below 20 °C. The month accumulates some 282 hours of sunshine and shows a 68 % probability of clear skies, although the risk of thunderstorms is moderate and average precipitation reaches 31.7 mm. Data: AEMET (1991–2020).
The last total eclipse visible from Esplugues de Llobregat occurred on 12 May 1706, more than three centuries ago, with a totality lasting almost four minutes. More recently, on 11 November 1901—125 years ago—the municipality witnessed an annular eclipse that covered 82 % of the solar disk. After the eclipses of 2026, 2027 and 2028, one must wait until 13 July 2075 to see the next annular eclipse with an obscuration of 87.5 %.
At the moment of maximum eclipse, the Sun will be just 4° above the horizon, directed toward the west-northwest, at an azimuth of 286°. This low position is equivalent to a few minutes before sunset, making the viewing direction almost the same as that of the summer solstice sunset. To follow the phenomenon without interference, it is best to find a location with clear visibility in that sector of the horizon.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
