Zaragoza is the capital of Aragón and Spain's fifth city by population, with close to 687,000 inhabitants. It sits on the banks of the Ebro river, in a broad depression at around 200 metres of altitude, halfway between Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Bilbao. The open Ebro valley gives it clear horizons in several directions.
On 12 August 2026, Zaragoza falls within the path of totality of the eclipse: the Moon will completely cover the solar disc for a few moments. The total phase occurs with the Sun low over the horizon. The horizon calculation confirms a wide margin between the Sun and the terrain at the evaluated contact.
According to AEMET data, August in Zaragoza brings a low thunderstorm risk, a favourable condition for observation. The reference station does not provide temperature or rainfall averages for this summary; the Ebro valley, however, is known for its warm, dry summers with frequently clear skies.
The last total solar eclipse visible from Zaragoza was on 30 August 1905, 121 years ago. The last annular one was seen on 11 November 1901. After the eclipses of 2026 to 2028, the next totality over the city will not arrive until 17 November 2180.
During totality, the Sun will be towards the west-northwest, at about 285° of azimuth, and around 6° above the horizon. Although the computed margin is comfortable, it is still a low altitude: it is worth making sure there are no nearby trees or buildings towards the west. An open spot resolves the observation.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes — Zaragoza is inside the totality path and the horizon allows the total phase to be fully visible.
Maximum occurs at 20:29 local time (18:29 UTC) in Zaragoza.
Look WNW (azimuth 285°); the Sun will be 6° above the horizon at maximum from Zaragoza.
Totality lasts 1 min 26 s in Zaragoza (C2 to C3).
Zaragoza will see totality (C2-C3) very close to the western horizon. The partial end (C4) falls below the horizon: you need a clear western view for an epic experience.
Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
