Villarrobledo is a municipality in the province of Albacete, in the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha, situated on the Manchegan plain at 729 metres altitude. With nearly 26,600 inhabitants, it is one of the largest urban centres in the region. Its foundation dates to 1292, and its history is linked to the routes that crossed the meseta. The agricultural landscape surrounding it—vineyards and cereals—defines the character of the territory.
On 12 August 2026, Villarrobledo will experience a partial solar eclipse. At 20:33 (local time), the Sun will reach its maximum obscuration from this city, partially covered by the Moon. The eclipse will be clearly visible: the Sun will stand 6° above the horizon with a clearance of 5.8° from the surrounding terrain. The path of totality does not reach this area of the meseta, but the partial phase can be observed clearly with appropriate filters.
In August, Villarrobledo's conditions are typical of the Manchegan interior: dry, bright summer with stable days. According to climatological data from the reference AEMET station (period 1991–2020), the risk of storms in August is low, which favours outdoor observations. The altitude of 729 metres above sea level moderates the nights somewhat compared to the lower areas of the plain, though daytime heat is fully summer-like.
The last total solar eclipse visible from Villarrobledo occurred on 28 May 1900, 126 years ago, with complete obscuration of the solar disc for barely 56 seconds. More recently, on 3 October 2005, an annular eclipse covered 90.3 % of the Sun for 158 seconds, a phenomenon many locals witnessed. After the eclipses of 2026, 2027 and 2028, the next annular eclipse over this city will not arrive until 13 July 2075.
At the moment of maximum eclipse, at 20:33, the Sun will be positioned in the west-northwest quadrant of the sky, with an azimuth of 284° and barely 6° above the horizon. This means it will be very low, almost skimming the lands of the meseta towards the northwest. To observe it unobstructed, it is advisable to seek a spot with good visibility in that direction: an open space, a gentle elevation or the outskirts of the town with a clear view towards the west.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes, Villarrobledo is an excellent choice (score 75/100): favorable geometry, clear horizon, and good August climatology.
Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
