Santa Uxía de Ribeira is a coastal municipality in the province of Pontevedra, in Galicia, with around 27,000 inhabitants. Located in the Arousa estuary, at barely 18 metres above sea level, it is one of the most active fishing ports on the Spanish Atlantic coast. Its geographic position on the northwestern edge of the peninsula gives it an oceanic climate marked by Atlantic influence, with moderate summers and rainfall distributed throughout the year.
On 12 August 2026, Santa Uxía de Ribeira will experience a partial solar eclipse. At 20:29 local time, the Sun will reach its maximum obscuration at 12.1° altitude above the horizon, bearing 279° — almost due west. With that margin of 9.3° above the horizon, the eclipse will be visible without obstruction for most observers, though it is worth seeking a location with a clear horizon to the west to fully enjoy the phenomenon.
August in Santa Uxía de Ribeira is mild compared to the interior of the peninsula. According to AEMET data from the 1991–2020 period, the average temperature hovers around 20.7 °C, with highs reaching 25.8 °C and lows around 15.5 °C. August rainfall averages 65.3 mm, a notable amount for this month, resulting from the Atlantic oceanic climate. The risk of thunderstorms is low, which favours astronomical observations.
The last annular eclipse visible from Santa Uxía de Ribeira occurred on 3 October 2005, when the Moon covered 90 % of the solar disk during an annular eclipse lasting 244 seconds. Twenty-one years have passed since that event. Following the eclipses of 2026, 2027 and 2028, the city will not witness another annular eclipse until 8 December 2113, with an obscuration of 83.7 %.
At the moment of maximum eclipse, at 20:29 on 12 August, the Sun will be 12.1° high in the sky, oriented towards the west — exactly at 279° azimuth. That position, nearly in line with the sunset, indicates the celestial body will be close to its setting, which adds particular visual context to the observation. It is recommended to position yourself at a location with the western horizon clear of buildings or tall vegetation.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
For the August 12 eclipse. Recommended stay: Aug 10–14, 2026.
