Puerto del Rosario is the capital of the island of Fuerteventura, in the province of Las Palmas (Canary Islands). With a population of 35,667 inhabitants and an altitude of 43 metres above sea level, the city occupies the eastern coast of the island. Its Atlantic location, facing the northwestern coasts of Africa, determines a temperate microclimate throughout the year, with sparse rainfall and abundant sunlight.
On 12 August 2026, Puerto del Rosario will experience a partial solar eclipse. Maximum occurs at 19:53 local time, with the Sun at 8.8° altitude above the horizon, clearly visible to the west-northwest. The margin above the topographic horizon is 5.4°, ensuring unobstructed visibility from most of the city. It will be a low-elevation phenomenon, so it is advisable to find an open location facing west.
August in Puerto del Rosario is dry and sunny. According to AEMET data (1991–2020), the average monthly temperature is 24.9 °C, with daytime highs of 27.9 °C and nighttime lows of 21.9 °C. Average precipitation barely reaches 0.3 mm, and the month totals around 291 hours of sunshine. The probability of clear skies is around 70%, and the risk of storms is low—favourable conditions for observing the eclipse.
The last total eclipse recorded in Puerto del Rosario occurred on 27 October 1780, 246 years ago, with just 19 seconds of totality. Before that, on 1 April 1764, an annular eclipse covered 86.6% of the Sun for 203 seconds. After the eclipses of 2026, 2027 and 2028, we must wait until 1 April 2136 for the next annular eclipse from here, and until 6 May 2236 for the next total eclipse.
At maximum, on 12 August 2026 at 19:53, the Sun will be at azimuth 282°, almost due west with a slight tilt towards the north (west-northwest). Its altitude will be 8.8° above the horizon, roughly equivalent to the width of an outstretched hand at arm's length. The low solar elevation will cause light to adopt warm tones, and any obstruction in that direction could interfere with the observation.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes, partial eclipse: the Sun will be 72% covered at maximum from Puerto del Rosario.
Maximum occurs at 19:52 local time (18:52 UTC) in Puerto del Rosario.
Look WNW (azimuth 282°); the Sun will be 9° above the horizon at maximum from Puerto del Rosario.
Puerto del Rosario is a good option (score 65/100): all eclipse phases are visible, though not the regional optimum.
Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
For the August 12 eclipse. Recommended stay: Aug 10–14, 2026.
