Ponteareas is a municipality in the province of Pontevedra, in Galicia, nestled in the valley of the Tea, a tributary of the Miño, just a few kilometers from the border with Portugal. With a population near 23,000 inhabitants and an altitude of 49 meters above sea level, it is part of the Condado region and occupies a transitional position between the lower lands of the Vigo metropolitan area and the mountainous interior of southern Galicia. Vineyards and riverside forests dominate its landscape.
On August 12, 2026, Ponteareas will experience a partial solar eclipse with maximum expected at 20:29 local time. The Sun will then be 11.6 degrees above the horizon, high enough to be visible from clear areas of the town. The lunar obscuration will not reach totality, but will noticeably alter the quality of light throughout the region. The use of certified solar filters is recommended throughout the phenomenon.
According to AEMET data for the period 1991–2020, August in Ponteareas registers an average temperature of 21.4 °C, with highs that can exceed 28 °C and nighttime lows around 14 °C. The risk of storms is low during this month, making summer the most stable season of the year in the Tea valley. Afternoons are typically warm and the probability of rainfall is lower than at other times of the year.
The last eclipse of significance visible from Ponteareas was the annular eclipse on October 3, 2005, more than twenty years ago. On that occasion, the Moon covered 90% of the solar disk for just over four minutes, leaving visible a narrow luminous ring. After the eclipses of 2026 and 2028, the next opportunity to see an annular eclipse from this municipality will come on February 27, 2082, while a total eclipse will not occur until October 26, 2144.
At the moment of maximum, at 20:29 on August 12, the Sun will be at 280 degrees azimuth, a direction pointing almost due west-northwest, and 11.6 degrees above the horizon. The margin relative to the terrain is approximately 9 degrees, which ensures direct visibility from open areas as long as there are no obstacles toward the west. To take advantage of the phenomenon, it is advisable to find an open area or elevated zone with a clear horizon in that direction.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
For the August 12 eclipse. Recommended stay: Aug 10–14, 2026.
