Mairena del Aljarafe is a municipality in Seville province, in Andalusia, located on the Aljarafe plateau at roughly 70 metres elevation. With about 45,900 inhabitants, it forms part of Seville's metropolitan area and sits on one of the elevated platforms west of the Andalusian capital. Its position on the Aljarafe ridge offers broad panoramic views towards the western horizon, a relevant detail for observing the 2026 eclipse.
On 12 August 2026, Mairena del Aljarafe will experience a partial solar eclipse. The maximum occurs at 20:37 local time, with the Sun at just 7.4° above the horizon and an azimuth of 283°—almost due west-northwest. The margin with respect to the topographic horizon is 7.1°, sufficient for unobstructed visibility as long as the observation point is clear in that direction. Certified solar filters will be essential throughout the event.
August in Mairena del Aljarafe falls within the continental Mediterranean climate of the Seville Aljarafe, with dry, bright summers. Data from the reference AEMET weather station (series 1991–2020) show a low risk of thunderstorms for this month, suggesting typically clear skies or sparse convective cloud cover. It is one of the most stable meteorological windows of the year in this region of inland Andalusia.
The last total eclipse visible from Mairena del Aljarafe occurred on 22 December 1870, 156 years ago, with a totality of 80 seconds. Before that, on 1 April 1764, an annular eclipse covered 86.9% of the solar disk for 268 seconds. After the eclipses of 2026, 2027 and 2028, one must wait until 13 July 2075 for the next annular eclipse, and until 20 June 2327 for the next total.
At the moment of maximum eclipse, the Sun will be at 7.4° altitude above the horizon, with an azimuth of 283°: that is equivalent to looking west-northwest, slightly north of due west. The Sun's low position means any obstruction in that direction—trees, buildings or irregularities of the terrain—could interfere with observation. It is advisable to choose an elevated location with a clear western horizon, such as one of the natural viewpoints along the edge of the Aljarafe.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Look WNW (azimuth 283°); the Sun will be 7° above the horizon at maximum from Mairena del Aljarafe.
Mairena del Aljarafe is a good option (score 65/100): all eclipse phases are visible, though not the regional optimum.
Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
