Lugo is the capital of its namesake province, in the interior of Galicia, with around 98,000 inhabitants. It sits at an altitude of 465 metres above the basin of the Miño river, surrounded by a landscape of rolling hills and Atlantic forests. The city took its shape as a modern municipality in 1834, though its urban roots run much deeper. Its position in the northwestern peninsula gives it an oceanic climate that sets it clearly apart from the rest of Spain.
On 12 August 2026, Lugo lies within the path of totality of the solar eclipse. At 20:28 local time, contact C3 will be reached — the end of totality — the moment that defines the observation. The Sun will be at 11.2° above the horizon, with a margin of 9.8° relative to the local topographic relief, ensuring unobstructed visibility. There is no need to seek an elevated location: from the city itself the total phase will be visible.
August in Lugo is the warmest month of the Galician summer. Data from AEMET for the period 1991–2020 show an average temperature of 19.9 °C, with highs typically around 26.3 °C and lows dropping to 13.6 °C. The average monthly precipitation of 29.7 mm is moderate for inland Galicia, and the risk of storms in August is low. Overall, the month offers favourable climatic conditions for observing the eclipse.
The last total eclipse visible from Lugo occurred on 30 August 1905, 121 years ago, with a totality duration of 92 seconds. Before that event, the city experienced an annular eclipse on 9 January 1777, with an obscuration of 95 % that lasted 83 seconds. After the eclipses of 2026 and 2028, the next annular eclipse visible from this latitude will not arrive until 27 February 2082.
At the moment of maximum eclipse, the Sun will be at an azimuth of 280°, which corresponds to a direction almost exactly west with a slight inclination towards the northwest. Its height above the horizon will be 11.2°, equivalent to just over a hand's span at arm's length. The observation should be directed towards the west-northwest sector of the sky, away from any building or tree in that direction.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes — Lugo is inside the totality path and the horizon allows the total phase to be fully visible.
Maximum occurs at 20:28 local time (18:28 UTC) in Lugo.
Look West (azimuth 280°); the Sun will be 11° above the horizon at maximum from Lugo.
Totality lasts 1 min 29 s in Lugo (C2 to C3).
Yes, Lugo is an excellent choice (score 95/100): favorable geometry, clear horizon, and good August climatology.
Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
For the August 12 eclipse. Recommended stay: Aug 10–14, 2026.
