Los Palacios y Villafranca is a municipality in Seville province, Andalusia, lying just 13 metres above sea level in the Guadalquivir valley, between Seville city and Doñana National Park. With over 36,000 inhabitants, it was established as an independent municipality in 1836 and blends a traditional agricultural base—rice paddies and fruit orchards—with the influence of the Seville metropolitan area, some 25 kilometres to the south.
On 12 August 2026, Los Palacios y Villafranca will experience a partial solar eclipse with maximum at 20:37, local time. At that moment the Sun will be 7.2° above the horizon, with a safety margin of 7.3° above the surrounding terrain, making it visible without obstruction from locations with clear horizons towards the west-northwest. Although totality does not reach this latitude, the partial obscuration will be noticeable to the naked eye with proper eclipse glasses.
August in Los Palacios y Villafranca follows the typical Guadalquivir valley climate: very dry with minimal precipitation. AEMET data from 1991–2020 shows low thunderstorm risk for this month, which favours eclipse observation. The low probability of rain makes the afternoon of 12 August an ideal window for setting up outdoors with ample time before maximum.
The most recent total solar eclipse visible from Los Palacios y Villafranca occurred on 22 December 1870, 156 years ago, with a totality duration of 1 minute and 45 seconds. Before that, on 1 April 1764—262 years ago—an annular eclipse covered 86.9% of the solar disc for just over three minutes. After the eclipses of 2026, 2027 and 2028, one must wait until 13 July 2075 for the next annular eclipse, and until the year 2327 for the next total.
At maximum eclipse on 12 August 2026 at 20:37, the Sun will stand 7.2° high and at an azimuth of 283°—that is, almost due west with a slight northwest deviation. This low but clear position above the horizon makes it advisable to choose a location without buildings or trees in that direction. A compass or the compass app on your mobile will be sufficient to orient your observation point correctly in advance.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
