Gasteiz-Vitoria is the capital of Álava in the Basque Country, situated at 547 metres altitude in the heart of the region. With over 257,000 inhabitants, it represents the main urban centre of the province. Its location inland gives it a distinct character from other Basque cities closer to the coast.
The total solar eclipse of August 12, 2026 will be visible from Gasteiz-Vitoria around 20:27 local time. The Sun will be positioned at just 7.8 degrees above the horizon, with a safety margin of 7.3 degrees from the horizon line. This low height makes a completely clear line of sight towards the west-northwest especially important.
Available data indicates a low thunderstorm risk in August in the region. However, the season can bring the typical weather changes of northern Spain, so it is advisable to check the forecast close to eclipse day to confirm visibility conditions.
166 years ago, on 18 July 1860, a total solar eclipse visible from this same area lasted 185 seconds of totality. The next total eclipse to reach Gasteiz-Vitoria will not occur until 17 November 2180, nearly 154 years after 2026.
At maximum, the Sun will be positioned towards the west-northwest, at an azimuth of 283 degrees. This orientation requires a good view in that direction with no nearby obstacles that could block the eclipse, especially given the low height of the Sun above the horizon.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes — Gasteiz / Vitoria is inside the totality path and the horizon allows the total phase to be fully visible.
Maximum occurs at 20:28 local time (18:28 UTC) in Gasteiz / Vitoria.
Look WNW (azimuth 283°); the Sun will be 8° above the horizon at maximum from Gasteiz / Vitoria.
Totality lasts 1 min 7 s in Gasteiz / Vitoria (C2 to C3).
Gasteiz / Vitoria will see totality (C2-C3) very close to the western horizon. The partial end (C4) falls below the horizon: you need a clear western view for an epic experience.
Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
