Ferrol is a coastal city in the province of A Coruña, in Galicia, with around 67,000 inhabitants and an average altitude of 24 metres above sea level. Located at the far northwest of the Iberian peninsula, it sits on the southern shore of the estuary that bears its name. Its historical character is tied to the Spanish Navy, which established one of its principal arsenals here in the 18th century. Today it is a medium-sized urban centre with a diversified economy.
On 12 August 2026, Ferrol will experience a total solar eclipse. The moment of maximum totality occurs at 20:27 local time, with the Sun at 11.8° above the horizon — a comfortable height that provides a margin of 9.1° above the actual terrain profile. At that moment the Sun will be almost exactly due west (azimuth 279°), so it is best to face westward and ensure there are no obstacles in that direction.
Historical AEMET data (1991–2020) shows that August is the month with the lowest risk of storms of the year in Ferrol. The Galician Atlantic climate can surprise with low clouds at any time, but the probability of severe storm activity in high summer is low. Although the August sky on the Corunna coast does not guarantee Mediterranean clarity, clear nights and evenings are frequent during this month.
The last total eclipse visible from Ferrol took place on 30 August 1905, 121 years ago, with a totality of approximately 2 minutes and 36 seconds. Before that event, the last annular eclipse recorded dates from 9 January 1777, 249 years ago. After the eclipses of 2026, 2027 and 2028, no total is forecast for Ferrol within the calculated horizon; the next significant annular eclipse will not arrive until 16 August 2175.
At the moment of maximum totality, the Sun will be almost exactly due west, with an azimuth of 279° — barely 9° north of the due west cardinal point. Its height above the horizon will be 11.8°, sufficient to be well above the surrounding terrain and with a margin of 9.1° above the actual topographic horizon. To observe the eclipse with good visibility, simply face westward and have a clear line of sight in that direction.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes — Ferrol is inside the totality path and the horizon allows the total phase to be fully visible.
Maximum occurs at 20:27 local time (18:27 UTC) in Ferrol.
Look West (azimuth 279°); the Sun will be 12° above the horizon at maximum from Ferrol.
Totality lasts 1 min 33 s in Ferrol (C2 to C3).
Ferrol will see totality (C2-C3) very close to the western horizon. The partial end (C4) falls below the horizon: you need a clear western view for an epic experience.
Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
For the August 12 eclipse. Recommended stay: Aug 10–14, 2026.
