Cangas do Morrazo is a municipality in the province of Pontevedra, in Galicia, with approximately 25,700 inhabitants. Located on the Morrazo peninsula, just 14 metres above sea level, it overlooks the Ría de Vigo from a coastal position that has historically shaped its fishing industry. The urban core blends the traditional town centre with neighbourhoods facing the sea, forming a village with a distinctly Atlantic character at the southern edge of the Rías Baixas.
On 12 August 2026, Cangas do Morrazo will experience a partial solar eclipse reaching maximum at 20:29 local time. At that moment the Sun will be 11.8 degrees above the horizon, with a margin of 7 degrees relative to the terrain profile, guaranteeing unobstructed visibility based on calculated data. The direction is nearly due west (azimuth 279°), so it is advisable to position yourself at a spot with a clear horizon towards the west to make the most of the partial phase.
According to AEMET records for the period 1991–2020, August in Cangas do Morrazo has an average temperature of 21.2 °C, with highs around 26.1 °C and lows that rarely drop below 16.4 °C. The average monthly precipitation is 37.2 mm, a moderate value, but the risk of storms is high: summer afternoons in the Galician estuaries are prone to convective showers. Anyone planning to observe the eclipse should take that possibility of cloud cover late in the day into account.
The last annular eclipse visible from Cangas do Morrazo took place on 3 October 2005, a little over twenty years ago. On that occasion the Moon covered approximately 90 per cent of the solar disc and the phenomenon lasted nearly four minutes. There is no record of a previous total eclipse in the available data. After the eclipses of 2026 and 2028, one will have to wait until 27 February 2082 for another annular eclipse to pass over this part of the Galician coast.
At the moment of maximum phase, at 20:29 on 12 August 2026, the Sun will be in the western direction (azimuth 279°), nearly facing the open sea for anyone observing from the coast of Cangas do Morrazo. Its height above the horizon will be 11.8 degrees, equivalent to little more than a fist held at arm's length. The waterfront promenades of the town and any spot with a view to the west offer suitable conditions for following the progress of the partial phase without obstacles in that direction.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
