Arteixo is a municipality in the province of A Coruña, in Galicia, with approximately 30,000 inhabitants and an altitude of 24 meters above sea level. It is located on the Atlantic coast of northwestern Spain, integrated into the periurban area of A Coruña. Its flat topography and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean create an open horizon facing west that defines much of the local landscape and conditions the visibility for solar observation in the afternoon hours.
On August 12, 2026, Arteixo lies within the totality corridor of the solar eclipse. Totality will be visible from the municipality: at the moment of third contact (C3), at 20:27 local time, the Sun will be 12 degrees above the horizon with a margin of 7.9 degrees above the topographic horizon. That clearance ensures that the solar disk will remain unobstructed throughout the total phase, with the local relief not interfering with observation.
Arteixo falls within the Atlantic climate of the Galician coast, with Augusts influenced by ocean humidity and temperatures more moderate than in the interior of the peninsula. The AEMET network data (1991–2020 period) available for this location are limited, but confirm that the risk of storms in August is low. That low storm activity is a favorable factor for eclipse observation, although cloud behavior on the Atlantic coast can vary from year to year.
The last annular eclipse observable from Arteixo occurred on January 9, 1777, 249 years ago, with an obscuration of 95% and an annular phase of 78 seconds. There is no record of a previous total eclipse for this location. After the eclipses of 2026, 2027, and 2028, the next annular eclipse to cross the sky of Arteixo will be on August 16, 2175, with a predicted obscuration of 96%.
At the moment of maximum totality, at 20:27 on August 12, 2026, the Sun will be 12 degrees above the horizon, with an azimuth of 279°: oriented nearly due west, with a slight deviation toward the northwest. That low position in the evening sky will place the solar corona very close to the Atlantic horizon. To locate it, it is advisable to orient yourself toward the west and raise your gaze about 12 degrees above the horizon line.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Yes — Arteixo is inside the totality path and the horizon allows the total phase to be fully visible.
Maximum occurs at 20:28 local time (18:28 UTC) in Arteixo.
Look West (azimuth 279°); the Sun will be 12° above the horizon at maximum from Arteixo.
Totality lasts 1 min 12 s in Arteixo (C2 to C3).
Yes, Arteixo is an excellent choice (score 85/100): favorable geometry, clear horizon, and good August climatology.
Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
