Antequera is a municipality in the province of Málaga, in Andalucía, with approximately 45,000 inhabitants and located at 519 meters above sea level in the heart of the natural region that bears its name. Nestled between limestone sierras, the city has historically served as a communications hub in interior Andalucía, connecting the Málaga coast with the plains of Córdoba and Granada.
On August 12, 2026, Antequera will experience a partial solar eclipse whose maximum will occur at 20:37 local time. At that moment, the Sun will be just 6.2° above the horizon, making it essential to have an observation point with a completely clear western horizon. The clearance above the topographic horizon is 4.4°, which confirms visibility of the maximum but warns that any obstacle to the west could compromise observation.
August is the most meteorologically stable month of the year in Antequera. According to AEMET data for the period 1991–2020, the risk of thunderstorms is low, favoring unobstructed enjoyment of the eclipse. The presence of the sierra acts as a barrier against Atlantic moisture, and clear skies are typical in summer afternoons.
The last total solar eclipse visible from Antequera occurred on December 22, 1870, 156 years ago, with a totality phase lasting just 67 seconds. After the eclipses from 2026 to 2028, one will have to wait until July 13, 2075 to witness an annular eclipse, and another total will not occur until June 20, 2327.
At the moment of maximum, the Sun will be 6.2° above the horizon and at an azimuth of 284°, an orientation corresponding to west-northwest. To locate it visually, position yourself facing almost due west and shift your gaze slightly toward the north. The low solar altitude is characteristic of sunset eclipses and requires choosing the observation site with special care regarding the horizon profile.

A solar eclipse is described by four key moments, the contact points between the discs of the Sun and the Moon:
Where the eclipse is only partial, the Moon never fully covers the Sun: only C1 and C4 occur, with no totality in between.

Maximum occurs at 20:37 local time (18:37 UTC) in Antequera.
Look WNW (azimuth 284°); the Sun will be 6° above the horizon at maximum from Antequera.
Antequera is a good option (score 60/100): all eclipse phases are visible, though not the regional optimum.
Yes, you need ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses during every partial phase. Regular sunglasses do NOT protect. Glasses can only be removed during the totality phase (when the Sun is fully covered); never during annular or partial eclipses. Pages flagged "visible" assume a clear horizon, not a viewing recommendation.
For the August 12 eclipse. Recommended stay: Aug 10–14, 2026.
